They are great musicians but I really hope they won’t do that for their next performance.” He pointed out that animals can get stressed due to the heat of the lights and the strange and unfamiliar setting. Even netizens who saw the performance commented that although 2NE1 is a unique group, their performance involving the birds was a bit “too much.” YG Entertainment stated, “At the time, a professional animal keeper was hired and we continued our plans while receiving his advice. Our intention was to show you a good performance but it seems like we made some people uncomfortable so we apologize. Entertainment Animals at the Olympics Opening Ceremony Environmental Issues

Besides Euro 2012 having been on the radar of animal rights activists, there is another big sports event coming up that has people riled up again. This time, however, not because the killing of animals will be involved thankfully. As probably everybody knows the Olympics in London are coming up and for the big opening show, designed by Danny Boyle (director of Slumdog Millionaire), the plan is to use live animals to recreate the British countryside that during the course of the three hour show will change into an urban setting. In this show, called “Isles of Wonder,” Boyle plans on using 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, 9 geese, 3 cows, 3 sheep dogs and 2 goats which is 119 animals too many in my opinion. Several animal rights groups have already spoken up about this issue urging Danny Boyle to rethink his idea of using these animals and they make valid points with their arguments. First and foremost, the welfare of these animals is a big concern of course. The whole setting will be a stressful experience for all of these animals. Over 62,000 people, bright lights, loud sounds and a general hectic atmosphere will certainly not do them good. None of these things are part of the natural environments the animals come from and will most definitely stress them out and cause them to be frightened. In a normal situation they would try to get away from a situation like this, which won’t be possible in the course of this show because there will be nowhere to go. Secondly, it seems like ever since this news was announced and petitions appeared the public opinion is that most people are against using these animals in the show. People don’t want their country to be associated with something like this. Maybe it’s a good idea for the Olympic Committee to listen to the public opinion because after all they are the people they want to watch their show and the Games.

Last but not least, the animal rights groups feel like this show will give a very misleading view of the British farming industry. The largest part of the farm industry does not have animals roaming free and grazing in the open. Most farm animals belong to factory farms and live inside in small spaces. It would be wrong to give people all around the world the wrong idea about the way the farming industry works in Great Britain (and anywhere else really but that is beside the point right now). The Olympic committee has gotten the RSPCA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) involved to make sure that the animals will receive the best care possible during the show, which is at least something they are trying to do right but the fact remains that using these animals in the first place is the wrong way to go. The RSPCA is opposed against the use of animals in entertainment as well as they say in a statement on their website but if this happens to be the case they want to make sure they are taken care of. They will be with the animals before, during and after the show to ensure there will be the least amount of stress put on these animals. They will also make sure that the animals will be completely gone before the fireworks start.

The mighty Bear is one of the worlds biggest animals, they are a lot more dangerous than the monkey. These animals are kept in cages and on a chain and some never see the sight of freedom ever. All bears kept in such poor conditions go crazy they turn inwards. To see a bear that has turned inside itself is the most heart breaking things you could see in your life. Their handlers whip and beat them if they do not perform, the bear doesn’t get angry because mentally the bear has given up on life knowing that there is nothing left but to perform. This activity has been banished from the Eastern world but is still being used as a method of entertainment in India, China and other countries with little or no animal rights.

Cobras are the most likely snake to be used for human entertainment all over Asia. The snake charmers take the snakes and make them perform for money. In parts of Asia this is a trade passed down from generation to generation. Snakes are blind, they don’t see like we do they work off heat patterns, the snake charmers fool the snake by agitating it waving their hands around its head until it strikes, or spits its venom. These snakes are suppose to use these skills for hunting not performing. They also use these snakes for fighting each other and they take bets on which type of snake will beat the other. Most species of snakes are used for this type of entertainment. The fights always end up in a fight to the death. In the wild they learn to keep their distance from each other to live in harmony. In an instance like this they are put in a ring with no escape one dies and one leaves the ring until the next time it is used for the same purpose.

You wouldn’t think that whales would be held in captivity because of their sheer size, well in America they have built a big enough tank to hold two against their will. Instead of hunting at the Artic Circle with their other whale buddies they are in Florida performing tricks in a huge fish tank for the public. These whales are as smart as the dolphin and elephant, but yet they are reduced to performing tricks for food. Keeping any of these animals in captivation is against Gods will, this doesn’t matter what God you believe in or whether you believe in one or not. It is wrong by any stretch of an imagination and should be stopped.

Lions, Tigers & Bears San Diego Sanctuary Can Be Last Chance For Exotic Cats

First, it's important to understand why animal sanctuaries exist in the first place.  While I am fascinated by the beauty and grace of exotic cats like tigers and jaguars, I have no desire to keep one as a pet.  However, there are others who do for reasons of status or an inflated sense of macho dominance.  Whatever the reason, there are black market suppliers who are bringing in wild animals or raising them just below the radar of government officials and selling them to the highest bidder.  From there, owners eventually discover that an exotic cat can become a handful, either because of its size as it matures or its nutritional requirements or temperament.  Eventually the animal ends up in an abusive situation because of a cramped and confined living space or malnutrition or physical abuse from a sadistic owner.  Sometimes these animals are given over freely to an animal sanctuary and sometimes they are offered by law enforcement who have confiscated them but have no means to care for them. In either case, the choices left when such a point is reached are two: animal sanctuary or euthanasia.  Because of the length of time having been out of the wild (or raised entirely in captivity) and the amount of human interaction these animals have had, reintroducing them back into the wild is out of the question. Somewhat surprisingly, zoos can also be another source of animals bound for a sanctuary. Zoos can find themselves with excess animals through animals naturally mating.  If other zoos are not in the market for that particular cat species, then a zoo may have one extra mouth to feed that it can ill afford.  Also, there are smaller zoos (and I use the term loosely if you think of a zoo as a properly sanctioned and regulated organization) and circuses that can find themselves economically hard pressed to care for large, exotic animals. Sometimes, in the case of bears or mountain lions in Southern California, man's encroachment into their territory can produce a situation where an animal is no longer afraid of humans or urban environments.  When an animal wanders into a neighborhood, is caught by local officials and released back into the wild but, because of its lack of fear or its growing need to find food, it keeps returning - wildlife officials are often faced with having to put the animal down.  Unless there is an animal sanctuary available to take it in.
In many ways, sanctuary owners would like nothing more than to be put out of business because of a lack of animals who need protection. But, unfortunately, as long as the profit motive is high and the egos of some people are great, combined with the economic realities that zoos and circuses can face like any other business, there will always be a need for the animal sanctuary as a place where these special animals can live out their lives comfortably.  At Lions, Tigers & Bears, there are currently three lions, four Bengal tigers, three black bears and several smaller exotic cats on the property.  They are provided with large, comfortable cages for eating and sleeping with much larger fenced areas for exercising. 

 To provide stimulus, the cages are interlinked so that the cats' access to the larger exercise areas can change every couple of days. Having suitable space is important.  Bobbi's latest addition to the sanctuary is the bear enclosure which is nearly the size of a football field for just three bears.  About ten feet out from all the cages and surrounding the animal pens is a secondary fence nearly 20 feet high. While Bobbi has a full veterinary facility and a staff of volunteers who prepare and feed the animals a balanced and nutritious diet, contact with the animals is kept to a minimum.  No one on the staff, including Bobbi herself, ever attempt to engage in physical contact with the animals.  The animals may recognize members of the staff and approach them within their enclosures, but you won't see Bobbi or her staff throwing their arms around a tiger and giving it a belly rub.  Most sanctuaries frown on that kind of human contact.

Friendship Between LION, TIGER and BEAR (News)

Eight years ago, a lion, a tiger and a bear were rescued during a police drug raid in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). The cubs, 2 months old at the time, were reportedly status symbols to their owners. The young cubs were brought to the Noah’s Ark animal rescue center in Locust Grove, Georgia. They were kept together by the staff there. Diane Smith, assistant director of the Noah’s Ark zoo, said: “We could have separated them, but since they came as a kind of family, the zoo decided to keep them together.”The three, named Shere Khan, Baloo and Leo, lived with the zookeepers at Noah’s Ark for 8 years, but have just been moved to a special facility just for them.

They are being kept together because now they would have great difficulty being separated and it is also such a touching example of what friendships can be formed if we look past our differences. In fact, part of the impetus for the move was to make them more accessible to the public, to show people what has been created among such unlikely candidates.

“[I]t is possible to see Baloo, who is a 1,000 pound bear, Shere Khan, a 350 pound tiger and Leo, who is also 350 pounds messing around like brothers.

“They are totally oblivious to the fact that in any other circumstance they would not be friends.

“Baloo and Shere Khan are very close.

“That is because they rise early, as Leo being a lion likes to spend most of the day sleeping.

“It is wonderful and magical to see a giant American Black Bear put his arm around a Bengal tiger and then to see the tiger nuzzle up to the bear like a domestic cat.

“When Leo wakes up the three of them mess around for most of the day before they settle down to some food.”

The animals do everything together, Jama Hedgecoth, founder of Noah’s Ark zoo, says:

“They eat, sleep and play together.

“As they treat each other as siblings they will lie on top of each other for heat and simply for affection.

“At the moment they are getting used to their new habitat.

“Shere Khan is being quite reticent about the move, but Baloo, the bear, is very good at leading him on and making him feel comfortable and safe.”For Shere Khan, Leo and Baloo, the differences between them may not be so clear. However, isn’t that the point? In becoming more familiar with someone, we can see more of what we have in common than what is different between us.

Black or white, Indian or American, environmentalist or not, are we not all human? Tiger, lion, bear, or human, are we not all living animals. As the old saying goes, “Why can’t we all just get along?” If we could all just get past our differences, and respect each other as a brother or sister on this planet, what a more harmonious world we could live in. A liger is the product of bizarre directive crossbreeding of a male lion and a female tiger, resulting in a creature that resembles their lion heritage more so than the tiger, and are entirely real. There are only a handful of ligers in the entire world.A Liger isn’t even a species, it’s a hybrid  there is no scientific name assigned to this creature due to its human assisted ancestry. While male ligers are sterile, female ligers are fertile, and can reproduce, but they’re unable to produce fertile offspring.Rare reports have been made of tigresses mating with lions in the wild, but breeding between lions and tigers generally occurs only in captivity. Under exceptional circumstances it’s been known for a tiger to be forced into ranges inhabited by the Asiatic Lion. However, this combination of species in the wild is considered highly unlikely. The present day range of wild lions and tigers no longer overlap. “Crossing the species line” does not typically occur in the wild, as “it would result in diminished fitness of the offspring.” said Ronald Tilson, director of conservation at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley. Geography is another obstacle to natural lion-tiger mating. Wild tigers generally inhabit Asia, whereas the lion’s current natural habitat is almost entirely in Africa. The Gir National Forest in India is the only location in the world where tiger and lion ranges overlap, increasing supposition that wild ligers roamed the area hundreds of years ago. “This would be highly improbable, because the Gir forest is really very dry and not optimal tiger habitat.” said Tilson.A liger looks like a giant lion with muted stripes or spots running through it. Most often, the striping is located across the back and hindquarters, while the abdominal area is spotted.

The spots are inherited from the lion, even though they’re not usually obvious in adult lions. Spotting can be found on lion cubs and assist for camouflage in the wild. On rare occasions adult lions will retain these. Tiger ear spots may or may not be present and the same applies to the tiger facial ruff. Though the tigers involved are usually orange in color, white tigers have been hybridized with lions to produce white ligers and golden tabby tigers have been hybridized with lions to produce golden ligers

The Reality Of Nature (News)

In the previous post, “Is it Real?” I posted a picture of a taxidermy mount showing a tiger fighting a python. The question was intended to replicate that of many visitors to museums, particularly children. I was delighted at the responses.We can approach the question from many different angles. At the most basic level, of course it’s real. It’s a physical object standing there in front of you. This isn’t The Matrix, how more real do you want? But in another sense, it’s not real. These are not living animals, just their skin and fur. There is no life left, and so perhaps the ‘reality’ has been removed. But those are two ends of the spectrum. Matt Williams, in commenting on the previous post, addressed this “yes and no” perfectly. When we talk of this specific piece, the question of reality is first addressed by its original owner. The piece was displayed in William Bullock’s London Museum around 1813. When this collection was being sold in 1819, in a letter to Robert Jameson of the University of Edinburgh, Bullock referred to the tiger/python as being the only fake in the collection. So we can see its owner and vendor does not consider it real. Firstly, the python itself is a composite, with two separate bodies joined to make a longer snake. The head is entirely a construct, made of painted wood. So, to Bullock, this made the specimen a fake, something decidely unreal. Secondly, the scene itself is labelled as artificial. The 1893 label suggests taking the piece as an example of the skill of the taxidermist, not a representation of any real event. So we have an artificial scene, and at least one partially artificial animal. So surely it’s not real? I would argue the reality of this artefact comes from its history. It may have been very artificial when made, but in the 197 years since it has acquired a ‘new’ reality.

The numbers are staggering and undeniably tragic but what do they mean for the planet's human population? According to a new study, the massive loss of biodiversity may increase the number of disease-causing organisms, making sickness a much more common occurrence.Sam Scheiner, a researcher with the National Science Foundation,  Global change is accelerating, bringing with it a host of unintended consequences...species extinctions may lead to increases in disease incidence for humans, other animals and plants. The problem, Scheiner's study shows, is that when habitats are fragmented, the species most deeply effected are those that act as buffers for disease. Those that thrive happen to be the best carriers of pathogens. One example was based on research conducted at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York. As forest habitat in this region was lost, the population of opossum, a strongly buffering species, dwindled as the numbers of white-footed mice—a species responsible for the spread of Lyme disease increased. As a result, instances of Lyme disease among humans in this area have increased. Researchers don't know why this correlation exists, but their work clearly shows that preserving natural habitats is the best way to prevent the effect. Andrew Dobson, a researcher at Princeton University who coauthored the study, explained When biological diversity declines, and contact with humans increases, you have a perfect recipe for infectious disease.a

Pakistan Fourteen year old Malala Yousafzai was admired across a battle-scarred region of Pakistan for exposing the Taliban’s atrocities and advocating for girls’ education in the face of religious extremists. On Tuesday, the Taliban nearly killed her to quiet her message. A gunman walked up to a bus taking children home from school in the volatile northern Swat Valley and shot Malala in the head and neck. Another girl on the bus was also wounded. The young activist was airlifted by helicopter to a military hospital in the frontier city of Peshawar. A doctor in the city of Mingora, Tariq Mohammad, said her wounds weren’t life-threatening, but a provincial information minister said after a medical board examined the girl that the next few days would be crucial.

Malala began writing a blog when she was just 11 under the pseudonym Gul Makai for the BBC about life under the Taliban, and began speaking out publicly in 2009 about the need for girls’ education — which the Taliban strongly opposes. The extremist movement was quick to claim responsibility for shooting her.
“This was a new chapter of obscenity, and we have to finish this chapter,” Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan by telephone.
The shooting provoked outrage across the country, angering Pakistanis who have seen a succession of stories about violence against women by the Taliban.

Doctors successfully operated on Malala and removed the bullet lodged in her neck, DawnNews reported on Wednesday. Malala Yousafzai was shot on her school bus with two friends in the former Taliban stronghold of Swat on Tuesday, then flown to the main northwestern city of Peshawar to be admitted to a military hospital. Malala spent Tuesday night in intensive care, where doctors at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) described her condition as critical. A military officer told AFP that a team of top doctors had flown to Peshawar to assess her condition on Wednesday.“They have a two-point agenda, to determine if Malala Yousafzai’s condition allows her to be shifted abroad for treatment or if she needs surgery here,” the officer said. Last night, a doctor at CMH told AFP that the bullet had travelled from her head and then lodged in the back shoulder, near the neck. “She is in the intensive care unit and semi-conscious, although not on the ventilator,” he told AFP on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media. State carrier Pakistan International Airlines told AFP that it had a Boeing 737 ready at Peshawar airport to fly Malala abroad if necessary, most probably to Dubai. “We are waiting for new orders and as soon as we get the instruction she will be flown abroad,” PIA chief Junaid Yusuf told AFP. Malala won international recognition for highlighting Taliban atrocities in Swat with a blog for the BBC three years ago, when the Islamist militants led by radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah burned girls’ schools and terrorised the valley. She received the first-ever national peace award from the Pakistani government last year, and was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize by advocacy group KidsRights Foundation in 2011. Tuesday’s shooting in broad daylight raises serious questions about security more than three years after the army claimed to have crushed a Taliban insurgency in the valley. The Pakistani Taliban claimed the attack in a series of telephone calls to reporters and then issued a strongly-worded statement justifying the attack on a child on the grounds that Malala had preached secularism “and so-called enlightened moderation”. The Taliban controlled much of Swat from 2007-2009 but were supposedly driven out by an army offensive in July 2009.
“It’s a clear command of sharia that any female, that by any means plays a role in war against the mujahedeen, should be killed,” said spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan. He accused the media of pouring out “smelly propaganda” against the Taliban, saying that women had also been killed in Pakistan military operations and were detained by the intelligence services. Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf telephoned Malala’s father to condemn the attack and promise that the government would pay for all medical treatment. President Asif Ali Zardari said the shooting would not shake Pakistan’s resolve to fight Islamist militants or the government’s determination to support women’s education. The United States denounced the “barbaric” and “cowardly” attack. Amnesty International condemned the “shocking act of violence” against a girl bravely fighting for an education, saying that female activists in northwest Pakistan “live under constant threats from the Taliban and other militant groups”. Malala was 11 when she wrote the blog on the BBC Urdu website, which at the time was anonymous. She also featured in two New York Times documentaries. Also reacted with horror to the shooting, which it said once again spotlighted the Islamist militancy scourge in Pakistan. “Malala Yousafzai is in a critical condition today and so is Pakistan. We are infected with the cancer of extremism and unless it is cut out we will slide ever further into the bestiality that this latest atrocity exemplifies,”wrote The News. Despite sporadic outbreaks of violence, the government is trying to encourage tourists to return to Swat, which had been popular with holiday makers for its stunning mountains, balmy summer weather and winter skiing. On Wednesday, state carrier took journalists on a test flight to Saidu Sharif, Mingora’s twin town, for the first time since flights were suspended due to the insurgency.

India Fumes Over Bollywood Star's US Airport Row

India lodged a diplomatic complaint after Khan said he was detained for over 90 minutes on Thursday when he landed at New York's small White Plains airport on his way to deliver a speech at Yale University.

"More than an apology will have to take place," Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur was quoted as saying in New Delhi by the semi-official Press Trust of India on Saturday.

The United States has apologised and denied allegations that Khan was singled out because of his Muslim name after the star jetted in on a private plane.

Other passengers on the flight were cleared but Khan was only allowed to proceed after the Indian Consulate intervened.

Khan was also detained for more than two hours in 2009 at Newark airport outside New York, sparking a similar Indian outcry and and a US apology.

"Detention and apology" have become a habit with the United States and cannot continue, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said in Moscow, the Press Trust of India reported.

"A repeated problem for the same person followed by clearance on account of (Indian) consulate intervention and a mechanical apology is not adequate," the news agency quoted Krishna, who was in Moscow for official talks, as saying,

The 46-year-old actor, one of the most popular stars of the nation's prolific Bollywood industry, made his way to Yale after his latest incident and said he was used to such hassles at US airports.

"Yes, it always happens... Whenever I start feeling arrogant about myself, I always take a trip to America," he joked with students. "The immigration guys kick the star out of stardom."

Khan's questioning at the US airport was front-page news in India in Saturday's newspapers.

"India protests Shah Rukh Khan's detention in US," said the Hindustan Times in a headline. "Khanned again," said the tabloid Mail Today.

Last November, the United States apologised to former Indian president Abdul Kalam after the New Delhi government complained he had been frisked at a New York airport.

India is sensitive about its VIPs undergoing security checks.

Kalam, 80, is a Muslim who served as a popular president of India from 2002-07. He was previously the country's chief military scientist.

Blade Runner' Arrested After Slashing Girl's Face

 The victim identified as Pooja Shetty (name changed) is a resident of Juned Nagar in Andheri (West) and works at an imitation jewellery-manufacturing firm. Pooja had walked out to a local store in her locality to call a relative from a public phone booth. “Pooja was walking past the shop when the accused Waris Qureshi made a pass at her and passed some lewd comments. Disliking what he said, Pooja walked up to him and said that she would complain about him to the police,” said Anand Pimplar, Pooja’s brother-in-law. The DN Nagar police officials, who are investigating the case, said that Waris was taken aback as Pooja had told him off in front of everyone and decided to teach her a lesson. He walked into the adjacent lane and took a razor from a nearby salon.
“Waris is a local goon in the area consuming drugs and threatening shopkeepers. He picked up a blade from a nearby salon and then slashed Pooja’s face,” said PSI Sadashiv Sawant from the DN Nagar police station adding that the blade cut through Pooja’s lips and cheek.
Following the incident, locals rushed to rescue the girl while Waris managed to flee the spot. Pooja was rushed to Cooper Hospital. Anand told MiD DAY that the attack was a culmination of Waris’s anger after his several advances against Pooja had failed. “He had made several advances, all of which Pooja had rejected. Waris threatened her that she would not be able to show her face to anyone if she did not agree to date him.”
The authorities later arrested Waris on Sunday afternoon from Dharavi. He has been charged under Section 326 and 506 (2) of the Indian Penal Code.
Cops said that even after his arrest when the accused was brought for identification, he threatened the girl of dire consequences in front of the entire police staff.
“We have arrested Waris and will be presenting him in court today. We have been informed by the locals that Waris used to pass lewd comments at several girls in the locality, however, none have come forward yet,” said Sawant.

Hot Scoop on Eileen Davidson's Return to Days of Our Lives

You can fire her. But you can't stop her. Soap superstar Eileen Davidson, who returns to Days of Our Lives on Thursday, Oct. 11 as nutty hell-raiser Kristen Blake, hasn't been on the NBC serial in 14 years. And she wouldn't be on it now if she hadn't been unceremoniously dumped from her long-running role as heroine Ashley Abbott on CBS's The Young and the Restless. Sony, which oversees both soaps, pulled the puppet strings on the deal, axing Davidson fromY&R mid-contract and basically trading her without permission, like she's with the NFL. Yet things worked out pretty damn well — for her and us! Who doesn't want to see Kristen back in Salem ruining lives and driving Dr. Marlena Evans bat-crap crazy? TV Guide Magazine talked with Davidson about her roller-coaster suds career and, of course, we hit her with the big question: Will she once again don those fake buck teeth and play Kristen's dippy doppelganger Susan?

TV Guide Magazine: The last time we saw Kristen, wasn't she trapped on a remote island somewhere?
Davidson: Yes. She was in a dungeon having been sold into slavery, which seems a little harsh now that I think about it, but at the time is was sort of goofy and crazy and the kind of stuff [the late Days head writer] Jim Reilly was creating for me. Days is a whole different kind of animal now. It's going to be interesting to walk that fine line between what we did back then with Jim and what we do now.

TV Guide Magazine: Not to mention the fact that newer viewers won't know any of that wackadoo '90s stuff. Fourteen years is a hell of a long time.
Davidson: Tell me about it! [Laughs] I'm the one who has to live with all the flashbacks we're showing! Flashbacks are so unbelievably mean to actors! In practically every other episode we've got some old scene that explains who Kristen is, especially when it comes to the dynamic between her and John [Drake Hogestyn] and Marlena [Deidre Hall]. It's been so much fun being back with Drake and Dee and diving back into that murky pool!

TV Guide Magazine: The Days PR peeps tell me there are scenes coming up in November where Marlena catches Kristen and John in a compromising position. Give us the dish.
Davidson: Both John and Kristen turn up at the Horton cabin on Smith Island at the same time. It's really just a coincidence but that's where a lot of history happened between them. When Marlena shows up and finds them together, she's sure Kristen set it up and it turns into quite a mess.

TV Guide Magazine: Shouldn't John be wary of Kristen, too? She ruined the guy's life! Several times, actually.
Davidson: [Laughs] Oh, he's very on guard! He's not going to trust her at all. Just the fact that she's there at the cabin says a lot, right? Kristen does try to make some inroads with John, assuring him she has changed and that she's trying to be a better person. She wants to be his friend. She really has changed a lot from the old days.

TV Guide Magazine: Yeah, right.
Davidson: Really! Everyone in Salem is horrified to see Kristen back in town and they should be. She was vile! You couldn't get much more evil than she was, right? So people are really hateful towards her. But she's had tons of therapy in the years she's been away. She's trying to be very sincere in reaching out to people. She even goes to work at the church.

TV Guide Magazine: The same one where she was found naked and handcuffed to the altar? That should be fun! Let's back up. We first see Kristen again when her father, Stefano, tracks her down in Europe?
Davidson: Yeah. He's very upset about the DiMera family being in splinters and he's reaching out to her to try to put it back together. He needs her help rounding up Chad and EJ, especially now that Lexie's dead. At first Kristen doesn't want any part of it but she acquiesces. Apparently, Stefano has been taking care of her and supporting her all these years. 

TV Guide Magazine: You made suds history during your previous Days run when you juggled five roles at once — Kristen, her goofball lookalike Susan, and Susan's three sibs, one of them a man! Will you resurrect any of that? Or would it be a mistake to try to recapture all that Jimmy Reilly insanity now that he's no longer with us?  
Davidson: At this point, the only one even mentioned in the dialogue so far is Susan. I guess it would be fun to revisit some of that. Yeah! [Laughs] What can I say? I'm kind of a masochist. And I still have Susan's teeth. I took them with me when I left the show. I pull them out every once in a while to keep my husband in line.

TV Guide Magazine: Let's clarify what went down between you and Sony and Y&R. Word on the street is that you weren't happy about the way you were treated, even though you ultimately did stay employed.
Davidson: It was a really weird time, what with Maria Bell being let go shortly after I was. I was led to believe that I was fired, though it was a bad news-good news thing — the bad news is Y&R is firing you, the good news is Days wants you. But then there was no actual confirmation that the Days thing was happening. Maria was in Europe at the time, so that made it even more confusing. But then the Days offer finally did come in, and here I am.

TV Guide Magazine: We know actors are at the mercy of networks and production companies no matter what those contracts say, but I've never heard of a case quite like this. 
Davidson: What happened to me at Y&R was shocking — I've been in this business a very long time and have never seen anything like it — but it's not like I haven't been fired before. And with everything going on in daytime right now, it was not completely surprising because everybody seems to be scrambling. Apparently, there was a lot of infighting going on behind the scenes at Y&R. We obviously know that now, considering what ultimately happened to Maria. At the time it felt like I was being ripped from my mother's arms but, in the bigger picture, I'm really happy to be at Days. It was always a place of great creativity for me. I should also say that a couple of months before I was let go at Y&R, Sony, which owns both soaps, did put out feelers as to whether or not I'd be interested in doing both shows and I said yes. That, of course, didn't happen, but it wasn't like I was completely blindsided. At least they did ask how I'd feel about going back to Days. But it was so strange being fired twice from the same show. I was, like,

This is one of a series of posts in honor of Women’s History Month. Our guest blogger today is Anne Boucher. Anne is a fan of early 20th century entertainment who became an independent vaudeville researcher after stumbling on some Nat M. Wills recordings and becoming instantly smitten. She hopes to one day learn what became of La Belle Titcomb.

In a profession in which self-promotion, youthful good looks, and continuous reinvention have always been paramount, Heloise McCeney, a/k/a La Belle Titcomb, was a master of her art. Born January 19, 1876 in Washington, D.C., she spent part of her youth in the San Francisco bay area following a family relocation. After a brief marriage to and divorce from San Francisco dentist Charles Titcomb, she took to the stage as a showgirl before going abroad and working around the world as a photographic model, entertainer, and beauty queen, winning beauty contests in multiple countries. On her return to the U.S., she initially claimed to be Spanish, South American, or French, and barely able to speak English, going so far as to affect an accent. Reporters who remembered her from her showgirl days often busted her for this, and eventually she was forced to stop.

Not content to be a simple singing act, she hit on a winning gimmick: her act consisted of performing songs and dances in a revealing white outfit atop a white stallion while colored lights and lantern slides created special effects. She sometimes got less than stellar reviews for her singing ability, and she particularly irritated a reviewer who took exception to her use of the American flag as the background for a cape that transformed into a dress train, as the flag then touched the ground. But she generally received positive reviews and was consistently a headliner and successful vaudeville performer.

Heloise married vaudeville, stage, and recording star Nat M. Wills in 1910 a mere ten days after obtaining a quickie divorce from the entertainingly named Waine Weinerbet. After a working honeymoon abroad, the couple toured on the vaudeville circuit until Wills became entangled with a Ziegfeld Follies chorus girl following his appearance in the 1913 show. In early 1914 Wills sued Heloise for an annulment, citing Illinois divorce law as prohibiting Heloise from marrying him so soon after her divorce. No doubt stung by the infidelity, Heloise fought back, requesting substantial alimony, even having Wills served with an order for arrest that cost him $3,500 in bail and a night of house arrest. Newspaper reports insinuate that the marriage was not the happiest, and Wills was quoted at the time as saying “I should have married the horse.” Wills ultimately got his divorce, remarried, and became a father in short order. The alimony battle continued until Wills’ untimely death from carbon monoxide poisoning in 1917.

After the divorce and Wills’ death, Heloise toured as a headliner of a (horseless) revue for a few years, but by the early 1920s she had reinvented herself as “Zorondo La Bella,” a Mexican soprano with a new gimmick: transforming her stage costumes in full view of the audience. Passport records show that she toured all over the world with this new act, but no real records of her after 1925 have yet been found by this researcher.

It’s a shame there were no paparazzi in the early 20th century, as Heloise could have been a tabloid staple. She caused minor scandals abroad, including horseback riding around London in a revealing, low-cut gown, the sight of which is reported to have caused Winston Churchill to fall off his horse. She became part of a group of “theatrical” women who partied with infamous Russian playboy Grand Duke Boris Vladimirovich. Long before Mick Jagger experimented with gemstones on his teeth, Heloise sported a diamond as a filling in an upper front tooth. A bizarre detail in a New York Times article from 1914 claims that Heloise had had her pet horse stuffed and placed in the hallway of her home, where it was used as a hat rack. No stickler for facts, over the course of five years or so she managed to shave a full ten years off her age, even giving her revised birthdate on official documents such as passport applications. One can only dream of what she could have done with today’s plastic surgery. At any rate, she will always be an American original.
